I sat on the porch
sipping malbec
watching the stream
the house wrens snuggling
before nighttime fell
she appeared
branches on her head
I froze
she wanted me to paint her
to give her life
I tried to pretend
I didn't see her
this annoyed her
I could no longer
see the stream
or the house wrens

the town's people feared

she watched the humans
she knew when they would crash

the message
the warning

but they didn't see

the first thing he saw was him
he thought he was

The elders always said
“she was one in a million”
but with proper education
she could be taught
the “correct ways”
she went to class
class after class
learning the correct ways
she would sneak
into the woods
to the sheep, the deer, the bear, the oak
the elm, the clover, the grass, the sun, the rain
this is where she laughed
this is where she danced
this is where she learned
but soon she was called back
to sit
for hours
hours upon hours
of angel school
